Essay Std.10 - While on a picnic you and your friends decide to go sailing, unfortunately, your boat capsizes in a violent storm.

While on a picnic you and your friends decide to go sailing, unfortunately, your boat capsizes in a violent storm. However all of you manage to swim to safety. Give a vivid account of the incident.

Our school normally starts in the second week of June and since we were busy studying the whole month of May because we are in Std.10 this year and it is considered to be the most important year of our lives.

My school friends' group thought that all the studying had really exhausted us and we needed a short break so we decided to go for a one day picnic to a lake resort near Neral.

We left for the picnic on Thursday so that we could rest for two days before school. On reaching the picnic spot our first activity for the day was to go sailing along the river. The sky was cloudy, but the boatman, said that this is normal weather in June and we should not worry.

As our sailing started, it also started drizzling and in a few minutes it started raining heavily with strong winds that made the boat rock violently. We could not return and the wind carried our boat further into the lake. The next ten seconds were shocking, in one strong gust of wind the boat flew high and capsized right in the middle of the river.

For the next few minutes all that could be heard was screaming and yelling of the whole gang. In the next second the life guards jumped into the river and swam towards us and each of them helped two friends to swim safely to the shore. The boatman brought the boat back on his own.

Back on the shore we were taken to our tents to change into dry clothes and given some hot tea and snacks to control our fear and shivering. We were scared with this near death experience and had to call our parents to take us back home.

As we shared this experience with our class in school some of them began to think of us as heroes who overcome difficult situations and come out alive and smiling.

Essay - Films : Advantages and Disadvantages

Films : Advantages and Disadvantages

A film is automatically associated with fun, entertainment and relaxation. The next 2 and a half hours are to be enjoyed thoroughly. Work pressures, daily routines, chores at home and all other commitments are kept aside for this time.

We used to watch films only in a cinema but these days films are shown on television within three months of its release on the big screen. With the introduction of multiplexes, where one can see more than one film, do some shopping and also enjoy a sumptuous meal, all under one roof of a mall. Films have a great influence on the general public and this allows cinemas to flourish as commercial ventures. Films are popular since it appeals to the viewer’s sight and auditory senses.

Movies play a big role in the development and direction of the society. Films that show virtuous characters tend to inspire people to do good. In the same way, villainous characters bring out the evil in people and make people indulge in criminal activities. Films provide entertainment to both the rich and the poor and we should choose what we watch. Besides providing entertainment, films educate and inform the viewers of various social aspects and how we should live our lives, what we should tolerate and how we should go about objecting and the wrong meted out to us. Educational films show us geography, history and science and bring out a lot of details students may not be able to experience only through reading.

Films which provide information, education and values are known as family entertainers and many of them can be viewed again when they are telecast on television. Though the cinema experience may not be available on television, it’s perfect for the second or third viewing.

Many recent films are made solely with the aim of gaining excessive profits and many of these films don’t appeal to audiences as many of them have cheap, silly and negative perspectives and contain no information value. Some are vulgar, crime filled and violent and have a very limited viewership and therefore don’t have a limited run at the cinemas but being made on a limited budget are commercially profitable compared to the investment.

Films play a big role in influencing the youth of our society and should avoid displaying obnoxious styles and habit forming vices on the big screen as the youth ape these actions and commit thefts, crimes, get into violent fights imagining themselves to be heroes and think their actions will attract public acclaim.

Films have an advantage only if they entertain, inform, educate and are commercially profitable to the makers and the actors portray positive images and the viewers get entertained and value for their money.

Essay Std.10 - How I looked after my relatives and managed to complete my studies too

It was a bright summer morning, I woke up at 7 o'clock and since my exams were going, I had to prepare for the next exam. Since I had a holiday, I woke up early and started my morning preparations by taking a bath and I prayed for the exams before starting my studies.

I had a math exam the next day so I started to solve the difficult sums first. I had eleven chapters to complete and by 12 noon I could complete four chapters. I had lunch and rested for two hours to relax. I got up and started studying and by 7 o'clock I had completed two more chapters. Since I was studying and my parents didn't want to disturb me, they decided to go to see a new released film and as they were meeting some friends, they would also go to a restaurant for dinner later and return late at night. This arrangement was good since I could complete my studies and I felt good about the whole arrangement.

At around 8 o'clock the door bell rang and I was wondering who it could be? When I opened the door I got a big shock. My aunt and uncle from the  U.S.A were standing with a big smile and arms outstretched to give me a hug. I stood at the door with my mouth open, still trying to believe the sight in front of me. They calmed me and I welcomed them in and asked them to make themselves comfortable.

They were returning to the U.S.A later that night and they decided to give us a surprise visit. They were disappointed that my parents had gone out and they would not be able to meet them. There was enough food for me only, for my uncle and aunt, I would have to order some food from the nearest restaurant. I ordered dinner and spoke to them while we were waiting for the food to arrive. After dinner at around 11 o'clock they left for the airport to catch their flight.

When my parents returned from their outing, I narrated what happened and they too were shocked but happy that I managed to look after them so well. After a busy evening I got back to my studies to complete the remaining five chapters. And these five chapters were completed by 4 o'clock in the morning. I slept for two hours, woke up and got ready for school. Surprisingly, the paper was easy and I was able to complete it in time.
