Advertising is paid promotion of products and services by the owners of these products and services who want the public to become aware of their products and services and buy or avail of these products and services. In simple words, advertisements are public announcements.
Advertising helps us become aware of various products and services available for public use. It gives us information about new products and services introduced in the market place. In a short while, for example in a television commercial, a company tells us about the products, its USPs (unique selling point), its availability, its price and if any discounts or offers are available. 30 seconds is all the company uses to convey all this information and if the advertising company is creative, they also tell us all this information in a story form to make the viewer more interested and create enough interest to remember the product or service and buy the product when the viewer goes shopping next or use the service when required.
The various forms of advertising are newspapers, television, cinema advertisements, hoarding, handbills, radio jingles, sampling, and the list goes on and on. Every form of advertising has it advantages and disadvantages. The newspaper advertisement is popular as long as an individual is reading it. Once an individual finishes reading the newspaper, the advertisement has lost its value and may not result in any sale or business for the advertiser. To generate interest of the reader, the newspaper keeps inventing new methods to attract the reader and has alloted specific days of the week to specific business and services, so Sunday is dedicated to matrimonial advertisements to enable the reader to read the advertisement at leisure, respond to the advertisement and if possible create a matrimonial union between two people. Hoarding are targeted at motorists and includes just a few basic essentials of the product as the motorist has just a second to register some important information, so these advertisements include big pictures and big text or numbers for instant impact. Sampling allows the customer to
sample the product, feel it, taste it if the product is a soup or some consumable product. Here the customer actually knows what the customer is buying through sampling. Through every form of advertising the advertiser has only one motive, to register and create interest in the mind of the customer.
Advertising is also a great form of employment, every time a product is advertised, employment of some kind is generated and it helps people to earn a living. Advertising is good for the economy, the taxes paid to the government assist the authorities upkeep the country. Advertising is also used to create social awareness, in recent times the government has used all sorts of advertising mediums to promote cleanliness. Health benefits are advertised for the benefit of the general population. Advertising is the lifeline of any business.
