1. ‘You’re working hard today.’ ‘Yes, I have a lot to do.’
2. I am looking for Christine. Do you know where she is?
3. It is getting dark. Shall I turn on the light?
4. They haven’t got anywhere to live at the moment. They are staying with friends until they find somewhere.
5. ‘Are you ready, Ann?’ ‘Yes, I am coming.’
6. Have you got an umbrella. It is going to rain.
7. You are making a lot of noise. Could you be quieter?  I am trying to concentrate.
8. Why are all these people here? What is happening?

1. ‘Is Colin working this week?’ ‘No, he’s on holiday.’
2. Why are you looking at me like that? What’s the matter?
3. ‘Jenny is a student at university.’ ‘Is she? What is she studying?
4. Is anybody listening to the radio or can I turn it off?
5. How is your English? Is it getting better?

1. I’m tired. I’m going to bed now. Goodnight!
2. We can go out now. It isn’t raining any more.
3. ‘How is your new job?’ ‘Not so good at the moment. I’m not enjoying it very much.
4. Catherine phoned me last night. She’s on holiday in France. She is having a great time and doesn’t want to come back.
5. I want to lose weight, so this week I’m not eating lunch.
6. Angela has just started evening classes. She is learning German.
7. I think Paul and Ann have had an argument. They aren’t speaking to each other.

SARAH: Brian! How nice to see you! What are you doing these days?
BRIAN: I’m training to be a supermarket manager.
SARAH: Really? What is it like? Are you enjoying it?
BRIAN: It’s alright. What about you?
SARAH: Well, actually I’m not working at the moment.
I’m trying to find a job but it’s not easy.
But I’m very busy. I’m decorating my flat.
BRIAN: Are you doing it alone?
SARAH: No, some friends of mine are helping me.

2. Ken is still ill but he is getting better slowly.
3. The world is changing. Things never stay the same.
4. The cost of living is rising. Every year things are more expensive.
5. The economic situation is already very bad and it is getting  worse.

62.1
1. Shall we get a taxi home?   
No, it isn’t far. It’s not worth getting a taxi.
2. If you need help, why don’t you ask Tom?   
It’s no use asking Tom. He won’t be able to help us.
3. I don’t really want to go out tonight.
Well, stay at home! There’s no point going out if you don’t want to.
4. Shall I phone Ann now?
No, it’s no good phoning Ann. She won’t be at home.
5. Are you going to complain about what happened?
No, it’s not worth complaining. Nobody will do anything about it.
6. Do you ever read newspapers?
No. I think it’s a waste reading newspapers.

1. The film isn’t very good. It’s not worth seeing.
2. It would cost too much to repair this watch. It’s not worth repairing.
3. If you have time, you should go to the museum. It’s worth visiting.
4. It’s quite an interesting suggestion. It’s worth considering.
5. There’s an interesting article in the newspaper today. It’s worth reading.
6. We can throw these old clothes away. They aren’t worth keeping.

1. Why have a car if you never use it?
There’s no point in having a car if you never use it.
2. Don’t eat if you’re not hungry.

3. Why work if you don’t need the money?
There’s no point in working if you don’t need the money.

1 a. I was very tired. I tried to keep my eyes open but I couldn’t.
1 b. I rang the doorbell but there was no answer. Then I tried knocking on the door, but there was still no answer.
1 c. We tried putting the fire out but we were unsuccessful. We had to call the fire brigade.
1 d. Sue needed to borrow money. She tried asking Gerry but he was short of money too.
1 e. I tried to reach the shelf but I wasn’t tall enough.
1 f. Please leave me alone. I’m trying to concentrate.
2 a. I need a change. I need to go away for a while.
2 b. She isn’t able to look after herself. She needs looking after.
2 c. The windows are dirty. They need cleaning.
2 d. Why are you going now. You don’t need to go yet, do you?

3 a. They were talking very loudly. I couldn’t help overhearing them.

3 c. He looks so funny. Whenever I see him, I can’t help smiling.
3 d.  The fine weather helped to make it a very enjoyable holiday.
